I'm not sure the players that are getting abused on social media and in the stands would call this a political issue.
I'm not denying that the gesture isn't having an impact however I'm not sure getting rid of it is the answer. In fact people booing the gesture is just providing fuel to the debate and hopefully forcing people to address some uncomfortable questions.
If it is replaced then I would expect something else to replace it.
It is political - Black Lives Matter is a political movement. They describe themselves as that on their own website.
The big problem is that instead of an anti-racial, anti-discrimination campaign based on values that every fair-minded person could support, the protest is allied to a political movement. It gives reason for fair-minded people to oppose it, and a cover for racists to oppose it. That was a problem for it across the world, not just football.
Also, and again this is measurable rather than just opinion, addressing something in a divisive manner like this aggravates a problem, not solves it.
The players have been very clear they are not representing the political movement though. Is that not enough?
Is the answer just simply to pick a different gesture? Would surely at least remove the political argument as an excuse.
