In his first season in charge of Brighton, CH took over the club on an 11 match winless run and were facing relegation. He managed to steer the club to safety, in 20th position.
In 2015-16 season, he managed to steer the club to 3rd place in the league, but lost out in the Play off semi-final against Sheff Weds. Brighton finished that season on 89 pts, having won 24, drawing 17 and only losing 5 times. Boro pipped them to the 2nd place by a goal difference of 2, having scored 72 and conceding 42. Boro only managed to score 62 times that season, but had a very solid defence, only conceding 31. Interestingly, Aitor Karanka was the Boro boss at that time.
The next season saw CH take Brighton up into the PL, by finishing 2nd in the league top Newcastle. They missed out on the top spot by 1 point only. Newcastle had 94 points to Brighton's 93. Brighton scored 74 times that season, which saw them win 28, draw 9 and lose 9 (including the 3-0 win by Forest at the City Ground). They only conceded 40 times.
Clearly, once he get his chance to bring in players of his choosing, I think we will see a massive uplift in our performances, and league position. Dare I dream and suggest he does 'a Brighton' at Forest? No, that is one optimism too far at this stage. The season after? Possibly, but lets concentrate on getting out of the predicament we are currently in first!
As many have already said on here, our club are carrying far too many average/below average players, too many past their sell by date journeymen and too many who are only here for the money and not wearing the shirt with pride.
I would hope the club will afford CH the opportunity to do what he feels necessary to improve our squad, not just his preferred starting X1. At the same time, I also hope CH feels it is a project that can be achieved and is one he feels will be worthwhile him taking on.
At the end of the day, as many have rightly said on this Forum, he is working with past managers/coaches signings and will have the opportunity to clear the decks and bring in his choices which he deems suitable to his preferred style of play.
It is my opinion that he is getting the side to be more defensive this season to secure the clubs safety, then will hopefully stamp his style on his new squad, which will be more attacking minded, similar to his first two full seasons at Brighton.
At the end of the day, as a certain famous manager once quoted, 'Rome wasn't built in a day'. We need stability and that stability needs to start with the manager and backroom staff, then let him build his squad and keep that squad together over a number of seasons so there is stability in his preferred style or formations.
Therefore, I hope he does decide to stay and take on the massive rebuilding project the club so desperately needs.
