I don’t understand these comments about a draw being a good result along the lines of because it was against ‘a recent PL team’.
Swansea have all sorts of shenanigans going on behind the scenes, with legal action by the Supporters Trust against their owners, who are reviled by the fans for asset-stripping, and a lack of investment in the playing squad.
They were without a bunch of key players including their captain in the middle of the park (Fer), Montero, Martin Olsson, as well as Bony still missing. Their forums (before the match) referred to their squad as ‘thread-bare’, ‘young and inexperienced’ and so on.
Swansea the football club were relegated last season. That team wasn’t. It isn’t remotely the team that even got relegated last season.
And let’s put the ‘against a team in the play-offs’ into perspective. They won their first couple of matches, but, without their key players, reality is setting in. It was 1 win in 5 before yday – and that was a 10 man mugging of Millwall created by an outstanding late sub performance by Montero on the wing, one of their important players out injured.
Going from being abject to being better than a weak team but failing to score is hardly progress. The abject performance is underachievement and the draw y'day is underachievement.
Look at their available squad and look at ours. And take a second look, thinking how good the players actually could perform, not how good Karanka has them playing in turgid draws. Pick the best team. Pick the best bench. How many of those players would be from each club?
The truth is, yesterday was a glaring opportunity for 3 points. The draw was a failure. Again.
