Nottingham Forest - Reading

Garner & Cafu have to start in midfield, we have no one else reliable or consistently good enough without injuries interfering in the team’s progress.

Yep, I'm expecting Ribs to be gone too. Just a hunch but I reckon he was after pay parity with other squad members and that issue isn't going to go away.

If he does go I wonder if we might bring Ioannou back? Again just a hunch but I suspect he left because we had ample cover, CH wanted to free up squad space and he was the one player who the club actually received an offer for. Bridges might not have been burnt.

Possibly Pap it's an interesting thought. I would happily take Ioannou back I thought he looked decent in the few games he appeared for us.

Reading prefer the 4-2-3-1 formation and do not regularly rotate the first team. So CH should have a fair idea of the team he will face for this match. Same could be said for us as well though.

A short passing team who like to build from the back with most of the play coming from within their own half before coming down the left hand side. Reading are not a side that you would class as aggressive but they are very good a placing traps and turning over possession and it does remind me of us under SL when we were going well. Also worth noting, that with the way Reading set up it is much better suited against teams that press on them high and aggressively. Against teams that are more stand off and defend deeper they struggle to move the ball forward and find themselves short of ideas.

Reading do like a shot from distance and will shoot on sight from anywhere so closing down quickly in and around the 18 yard box is a must but more importantly is being reactive to the second ball as this is how they have scored most of their goals this season.

Joao is their danger man with 18 goals to his name so far and a player with a trick or to when in a 1v1 situation so the central defender will need to make sure one engages and the other is well positioned to cover. We really don’t want a CB being pulled out to cover a FB.

A issue for Reading this year has been the lack of strength in aerial battles and do lose a lot of duals which surely is an area we can take advantage of if we can get the delivery right from set plays.
Also if you were to ask me what do they struggle against it would be players willing to run with the ball down the wings. Without the ball Reading’s FB’s will narrow-in super close to the CB’s to stop central play and are very reliant on the wide midfielders filling the FB spot. Now here is the thing if you watch reading where the midfielder is not able to cover a player running down the wing the whole back four move across and I mean the whole 4. You will see that the other FB can regularly end up in line with the penalty spot as they move across as a wall of four. So a good winger with a good back post cross is going to open up and lot of chances for anyone coming in from that side.

Can I call a winner of this game I really can’t because we are / have been struggling to score goals. If we had found our goal scoring touch then I would be backing us for a 3-0 win because we meet everything reading struggle to play against. We just can’t create proper chances for strikers to score. So going to say 0-0

I think its fair to say that if Figs gets selected on Saturday, and it wouldn't surprise me if he is, then Reading will have Joao targeting him as the weak link in our central defence. I am sure Joe will be told to man mark Joao to try and eliminate any c**k ups caused by Figs

Great write up McForest, makes me think a tight attritional starting line up, a bit of a long ball spell and bring on the pass and move players later in the game. Use as much of the squad as possible. Huge diversification in tactics during the game.

I hate that I'm worried about a game versus Reading, I hate that there is a high chance that one of Reading or Barnsley might even get promoted while we languish down here. At least when it's a Villa, or a Leeds, or a Newcastle, no matter how much it might stick in your craw you can at least take consolation in the fact they have some sort of place there, it's when the "crap ones" get promoted that it really hurts & you realize quite how deep a slumber this sleeping giant has fallen into.

On that basis alone I hope we stuff them 19-1, with Figgy scoring their goal as an act of sympathy.

Reading = A proper plastic club!

No redeeming features whatsoever.

Ahh Joao, another player deemed not good enough for us by many when we were linked with him a couple of years ago. I remember it very well.

Reading did pay £5M for him, dont think we were ever in the running for that. If we had bought him Im sure he would be consigned to our bomb squad or out on loan by now.

Reading paid 5m for him, we were linked with him for 1m when he was going through a terrible patch for them, he has since regained his form
