Perspective - Sausage Roll - 13-04-2025

It was very interesting to read some of the comments on here yesterday after the final whistle. Of course it's annoying that we played badly and lost. I get that. But anyone would think the result doomed us to relegation. As I type out this post we're still third.

At the beginning of the season most posters on here would've been happy with 10th to 14th and a season with no drama. Whatever happens in the last six games we'll have achieved that at the very least and hopefully exceeded it. With a Wembley appearance thrown in.

The team this season has achieved things no Forest team has done in years - an away win at Anfield, a league double over Man U, six straight top flight wins - and they deserve a bit of slack and patience.

We've got just over a week now for the lads to rest up and recover and for Nuno to work some more magic. But even if he doesn't this has been a fantastic season and the one where we can truly say we're back as a deserved member of the Premier League.

You can be pint half full and dress it up however you want Sausage but yesterday was a calamity. We lost last week but came away with some respect for the way we dominated Villa in the second half. Yesterday we created nothing and were truly shocking.

My only hope is that this season we've recovered well from set backs. But the performance yesterday was dire, just when we needed to get something. A point would have been disappointing, but to lose the game was pathetic.

RE: Perspective - jurgen rober - 13-04-2025

This season reminds me a little bit of our last season in the Championship. We are achieving more than was ever expected and so are not fully prepared for the consequences. When we were promoted ahead of time, we then had to have a massive recruitment to actually have a big enough squad to compete and this time as we have 'passed' seasons 3 and 4 and gone to season 5 we don't have the necessary competent 'back-up' in the squad to allow us to make significant changes or give a rest to some players. The last few weeks have been a slog and cup ties with extra time and penalties have not helped the cause and it was inevitable that we would lose players at some time. With our best 11 on the pitch we can give anyone a game but miss the odd one or two or a few below par and we will struggle. The aim will be to ensure we have cover of a sufficient quality to allow us to rest players or even change 5 players in a match that are of good enough quality to keep on an even keel. Time and money .......

We are still in an extremely good position to qualify for the champs league. Yesterday was a shame but ultimately it doesn't matter, we just need to get the required points in a different game. Everton did a job on us. Thankfully spuds will be very different and play to our strengths a lot more.

We'll be fine whatever happens. For me, 3 wins is definitely enough..... bit sad it's not 2 this morning, but onwards and upwards..... that last game of the season show down with chelski is suddenly looking a bit more likely....

I'm not dressing anything up. I'm stating facts about what has happened this season. And sorry but I disagree. It wasn't a 'calamity' at all and that kind of comment is exactly what prompted me to open this thread.

No result of a football match is ever a calamity. Look at the world outside football and you'll see calamaties.

I blame the curse of Manager of the Month

Can I just remind everyone that almost one year ago to the day we lost to Everton and we were one point I repeat one point above the relegation zone.

That is all.

RE: Perspective - Username - 13-04-2025

I don’t think we can really have any perspective until the season has played itself out.

I have said before that one of the things that has been lauded as Nuno’s strength could arguably one of our weaknesses: having a small squad.

If we do drop out of a Champions League spot that will have some effect on the players, especially those with any ambition of playing at the World Cup in 2026.

At some point we have to think beyond how far we have come and where we should be.

Sniff, this 'look at where we were last year' talk will not be being said by the players, the staff or the owner. If we dont qualify for the champions league when we were 8(?) points ahead with 8 games to go then they'll all be thinking its a complete disaster. Finishing 6th or lower will be considered a failure, not an achievement, trust me.

RE: Perspective - RyanR - 13-04-2025

There's no way this season can be viewed as anything other than a success, regardless of where we finish in the top half. I've been as guilty as anyone in increasing my expectations based on performances on the pitch, but nobody in their right mind could have anticipated how well we'd do this season. I'd snap your hand off for anywhere 3rd-5th for Champions League, but I'd also be delighted with any form of European football

RE: Perspective - pennhillred - 13-04-2025

I completely understand the point that at the start of the season, most of us would have taken anything other than a relegation scrap and that midtable would have been huge progress and seen as a successful season.

But, perspective changes.

To have come this far and done so well and to be at the top end of the table for most of the season, our hopes and expectations change.

So there are fans that will say that even if we miss out on Champions League football, this season is a success. And they’re right.

But there are fans that will now see finishing 6th or lower as a terrible disappointment and a huge opportunity missed. One that we might not get again.

And they’re right, too.

I think it’s ok to be really worried about missing out on top 5 and also be really happy about the season we’ve had.

Yes, this time last year we were in our second, horrible relegation scrap.

But this time 12 days ago, we’d just beaten Man United to go 8 points clear of 4th and 4 points off second.

Perspective is needed, but it’s changed dramatically since the start of the season and I’d be devastated if we miss out on champions league. And I have a feeling our owner would be too.

RE: Perspective - Salvatore Matrecano - 13-04-2025

To use words such as calamity and disaster are plain wrong and we still have a decent chance of getting Champions League and a very good chance of a Europa or Conference spot.

However a bit of me does think that as unexpected as it was, this could be our best ever chance to join the big time with Spurs and Man U both having stinkers, City no longer a dominant force. All 3 will likely be stronger next year, we don’t know when the next opportunity will be.
I hope and still think we can get over the line, regardless it is a massive improvement on where we were last season with essentially the same squad.
