Heres the thing, we can’t turn up with the team we played on Saturday vs Wolves. They will fight for sure but Tottenham will simply be better.
Or does Cooper return to those in the squad who may have more quality but have yet to show the same fight? I would love it if that happened and we got a result but just cannot see it logically.

That team on Saturday will get your draws Vs the likes of wolves/Burnley maybe a win against Luton. But noway do we get anything at spurs with it

RE: Nottingham Forest - Tottenham - The reds - 11-12-2023

The Team I would go for Tottenham would be
                   Turner
Williams Boly Murillo Niakhate Toffolo
     Mangala Sangare  Danilo
           Gibbs-White Elanga
           Elanga

RE: Nottingham Forest - Tottenham - Jacksbadhobbits - 11-12-2023

for me if they are all fit we keep the same side. Saturday wasn’t a classic but we were the better team. There was also evidence that there was some spirit in that 11 and who wanted to play for the manager. Spurs are very good coming forward but leave some gaps at the back. They will look to dominate possession and territory. That style could suit the way we set up on Saturday

RE: Nottingham Forest - Tottenham - Tricky - 12-12-2023

It will be interesting to see if Murillo is fit on Friday and if not, whether Worrall gets a recall.

Lets see if there really is a way back for certain players

RE: Nottingham Forest - Tottenham - Jsmed - 12-12-2023

I think Steve needs to be brave in this game. Back to the championship formation with the front 2 pulling wide into the channels like Davis/Johnson did. That will allow space in the middle for MGW as Zinkernagel did.

Turner
Williams Boly Murillo Niakhate Toffolo
Yates Mangala
MGW
Origi Elanga

Felipe in if Murillo isn’t available.

If you can get Elanga in behind Pedro Porro in that left channel and running at that nutter Romero, you never know what he might do haha

Spurs play 3 at the back with wingbacks. The difference is their wingbacks don't just stick to the wing, they roam and cause trouble by overloading other areas. I'd be tempted to play 3 at the back and match man-man on their wingbacks, track and nullify. That does mean you have to be brave and leave 3 v 3 at the back.

RE: Nottingham Forest - Tottenham - Mist From The Trent - 12-12-2023

Spurs do not play 3 at the back. It's a flat back 4 with both full backs coming inside.

Yep that’s correct.

They play Romero and Davies as their 2 centre backs.
Porto and Udogie play as inverted full backs.

Kulesevski roams all over, and behind him are2 athletic midfielders in Bissouma and Sarr.

Johnson, Richarlison, and Son will pay the width of the box.

If you pay with 2 CB’s it’s a nightmare, because then your full backs play narrow and they have space out wide.

We will play 3 at the back, the 2 questions for me are

1) will we revert to the box midfield we played last season and play Danilo with MGW, meaning Kouyate is left out.

2) is it Elanga up top or Origi. We need genuine pace as we won’t have a lot of the ball.

RE: Nottingham Forest - Tottenham - Mcforest - 12-12-2023

As a neutral when watching Spurs there is a lot to enjoy when they step out onto the pitch. Some would say a breath of fresh air and a move away from the keep ball that has consumed football over the last few years, to the new more exciting brand that is we will keep attacking and coming forward. No more of the pass into midfield for it only to be played right back to the defence from where it came. Now it is turn and go forward, over loading the central areas of the pitch and removing the Fullbacks blocking the pass further up the pitch to the wingers. Yes as a neutral you know at least one of the teams will score in a spurs game.

So how do Spurs line up? Without the ball Spurs are 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-2 depending on who is available to the manager or if they believe the team they are playing are more likely to lose possession more often. I can see people saying but 4-4-2 nope they are 4-2-3-1 all day! Well actually when defending Kulusevski moves from the 10 position out wide when defending to form a 4-4-2 with little space between the midfield and defence which each player defending zonal areas. Then, in possession, we see Kulusevski move to the inside channel as an extra central midfielder and Sarr moves to the right central pocket while one of the front two moves to the wing high up the pitch ready to run in behind rather than waiting for the standard midfielder to run from his defending position up the line. This also increases the box-to-box threat.

So what are spurs with the ball? Well with the ball the heat maps would say 2-1-2-2-3. The big feature and talking point is the fullbacks come inside as false fullbacks and position themselves further up the pitch than the CDM and are extremely narrow. The objective of this would be attracting the opposition forwards and midfielders inside to open the space in wide areas. It’s a high risk, high reward formation and it needs the Fullbacks to be comfortable on the ball. Another benefit for the iinverted FB is they are not expected to make lung bursting runs up and down the pitch anymore the wide forwards stay wide and are considered the main crossers of the ball and those that provide the width when needed.

So with the formation covered lets look at the style
Spurs love to take long shots from outside the box because of overwhelming numbers pushing forward the defending teams drop back to cover runs and the space for through balls meaning due to the overloading numbers in the midfield caused by the FB’s they receive the ball with more time to pick a shot from distance.
So on that basis you would think teams see that long range shot stat and go well lets just push up. That I’m afraid is harder said than done. You see Spurs especially in wide areas overload a side and force the defensives lines back with short sharp through balls.
The high defensive line and individual player zonal press is also very noticeable when we discuss spurs style of play. Spurs want to control the ball in the opposition half not in defence third or even part of the middle third they want to be forcing the play to happen as far away from their goal as possible. Yes it runs the risk of balls over the top for pacey players to run onto but with a well structured back line and an overloaded midfield teams are not able to hold onto the ball for long enough to get a runner going from the defensive position into an attacking one quick enough before a 2v1 situation occurs.
It all sounds very complicated when you read it but the real trick to Spurs style is it is simple and energy efficient. Team instructions are look forward for a pass, wingers stay wide and cross. Midfielders go forward as you have 3 lines of cover behind you. Pass and move.

So I’ve talked spurs up a bit so let me look at the bad side of spurs.
Well first and foremost they have a walking red card in Cristian Romero and now he is their only true centre back. He hates players running at him and if turned dives into silly challenges.
Secondly individual errors have proved very costly to Spurs this season. Can’t put a reason to why they make so many. It’s just a very spurs thing to do since the beginning of time. Thing the game plan has to be pressure on them when they have the ball so we are ready to take advantage of any that come our way.
Aerial duels are also proving to be a big weakness this season and providing team can get a good delivery into the box they have struggled to be first to the ball, they have been heavily reliant on the second phase to clear the lines.
Lastly I am going to point out that for all spurs ability to push forward they do get caught offside a lot.

Stats
Spurs have won 75% of games against Forest
Spurs have won 50% of their away games
Spurs score on average 2.25 goals per game away from home and concede 1.38
Forest have won 29% of their home games this season
Forest score on average 1.43 goals per game away from home and concede 1.29
Forest have scored first in 7 of the 16 games played so far while Spurs have scored first in 13.
These numbers would suggest that Spurs has a 81% chance of being the first team to score
Suggested bet +2.5 goals and BTTS.

Very interesting Mcforest. Great analysis.
