I decided to pester him to let the system run a team on forest to see what it came out with. It used data on each player/ manager/ club / fans / past success and a lot of other stuff over a 3 year period and this is what it believe we should be playing.

Just to note i've made it real simple as it has done partnerships, players coming in and the changes across the set up (example Felipe out so Boly comes in but that also means Lodi and Aurier are replaced with Biancone and Williams), passing patterns, build up and movements, pressing points etc.

I'm just using it as a discussion point and i bit of fun because really on paper it is a nice looking team which should be able to control a lot of games (the algorithm was showing if we had this team at the start of the season and could play week in week out our average possession score should be 58%) and create overloads as well as retain the ball better than we have seen this year. For me the fault of why it hasn't worked it down to so many factors this year: break in rhythm in the games (world cup just as we were picking up), injuries and the amount of injuries, adjustments to the league, Players who were going to give us the experience not performing, start of preseason training. But that said i do believe now that we are settling down a bit next year if we can keep as many of these players as possible we are going to see a different team.

With the ball

            Henderson

Niakhate   Felipe    Aurier

           Lodi Mangala

Scarpa MGW Yates Johnson

               Taiwo

Without ball

              Henderson

Lodi  Niakhate  Felipe  Aurier

               Mangala

         Scarpa MGW Yates

                                        Johnson
                   Taiwo

Second team if interested that came out not using any current players from first set up.

Navas

Mckenna Boly Worrall

Kouyate Biancone

Williams Freular Danilo Surridge

Wood

A quick few finding you could say is that Freular is seen statistically as the swap for MGW and chance creator. Biancone has excellent stats from 2 years ago. Defence is not looking like our strongest point in the team on back ups.

I like the first team but dont think Mangala is a natural holding midfielder. The one who has played there with other clubs is Shelvey but he has looked so clumsy in the tackle he worries me. Probably just stick Yates there. Not sure how much Forest use stats regardless.

Actually your right he isn't a natural holding midfielder but is he is a driver (ball carrying player) which is why the simulation puts him in the deeper roll. It means that more options are created and pivot points created over someone who is more defensive minded or a longer passer. "Short attacking diamonds with side overloads are more likely to be formed with a player that carries the ball from deep into the middle section of the park. Also creates doubt in other players minds as if the player will seek to retain possession via overloads or run the ball into other directions. Defensive lines are more likely to be fractured if driver is placed directly behind a box to box type player with high energy levels"

It does make you wonder how good we could've been if we had have had better luck with injuries. He's never had the chance to select that team above at any point.

If we could've named that team all year or close to it, it does feel like we'd be up around Palace.

We'll be fine, we have plenty of assets. We don't need a rebuild anyway, our squad is stacked for the championship even if we sell/release half of them.

We probably only need 3-4 players in depending on exactly who leaves.

For me this was always the big benefit and I think we've done well on that front. Set ourselves up nicely with a mixture of young players and championship level veterans. Plus two years of parachute payments to maintain a high wage bill.

I just hope the likes of Awoniyi, Niakhate, Mangala etc. don't get too big for their boots and bugger off somewhere else. Though having said that it's not like they've torn up the league so I'm not sure how many takers there'd be (not in England anyway).

Even if we do lose Johnson, providing we recruit a decent goalie (or decide to give Horvath a chance should Luton not get promoted) we should have the nucleus of a good squad.

Again agreed, this is becoming a habit Wassy! Sixty four dollar question though who managers us in the Champ and if it is SC do we totally review his backroom staff which needs to be undertaken in my opinion? Would SC take kindly to his mate Tate being replaced?

I'd say that's the million dollar question, I'm sure you know my answer! I don't like how we keep agreeing either but yes SC with an updated backroom staff would be ideal and perhaps a way to keep SC and satisfy the want for change.

Obviously difficult to know whether he'd be open to that. I don't think it's a lock that he stays although I do also think that the Forest job whilst being high pressured next year, is also going to be enjoyable if we do start well. Whoever gets it has a very good opportunity for a promotion on their CV.

Just look at Parker at Bournemouth, terrible manager yet twice promoted due to just managing teams that are stacked for the championship.

I just don't think any of them have shown anywhere near enough to justify that. Mangala is the only possibility but they'd likely be taking a wage cut to move back abroad (even with the relegation release clause). Also, you've spent a year adjusting to the best league in the World, if you're young you want to see the returns on that investment. Second season is normally where they step up after a year adjusting.

Honestly, same as SC, I think a year being one of the top sides whilst still getting paid well, is an attractive prospect personally. It's a good opportunity to pad your stats too as an attacking player and generate interest for a future move if it doesn't work out. This applies to MGW too, just a good chance to get loads of games, and build your confidence.

Ideal scenario we come back with a young team that we can get promoted then keep together the following year and make a much better fist of the prem second time round. I'm aware it's not as easy as it sounds but there's no point denying that things will be heavily tilted in our favour for the first season since Doughty left I'd say.

And imo Yates will attract a few offers in thr summer.

What's changed is our remaining squad will be stacked in comparison to recent years in the championship, with a decent age profile in some areas and plenty of resale value.

Also we can afford to keep more of them due to parachute payments.

in all honesty would we want to keep majority of the players we have now because if they can't play together now they sure as hell won't be able to play together in 5/6 months time IF we get relegated, But saying that there is a few players worth keeping if they're willing to stay such as Johnson, Niakhate, Felipe, Mangala, MGW, Danilo and Awoniyi. Do what the great Cloughie said and thats as long as you have a good spine in the team you have a good starting point.  All this assuming we actually get relegated. Its obvious that we'll need to sell a couple of good players to either buy again or balance the books.

RE: NFFC Financial Talk - Salvatore Matrecano - 18-04-2023

I know this is the wrong thread but just want to say there is a lot of talk about tearing up the Championship with the current squad minus a couple of necessary sales.

I seem to remember fans of Norwich, Watford, West Brom, Swansea, Cardiff, Stoke and a few others too being cocky and confident of a quick return with their teams stacked with Premier League experience. Its not that simple and too many have been shown up by lesser teams with younger hungrier players.

Three of those teams have recently also bounced straight back. Norwich also barely spent in the Prem, Watford are a terribly run club, Stoke were a mess when they came down, Cardiff likewise. I don't think those teams would've been that confident.

I get your point but at the same time there's no point pretending we won't have a clear financial advantage courtesy of parachute payments meaning we can sustain a higher wage bill and generally wage bill equals league position. Plus we have a chunk of players that we know have performed well in the championship either for us or other sides.

The challenge will be trimming the squad in a way that keeps the players you actually want and loses the likes of Freuler that you wouldn't necessarily want in the Championship

RE: NFFC Financial Talk - JollyLolly - 18-04-2023

I think we could bounce straight back at the 1st attempt with good planning, top notch coach (SC?) and only little modification to our existing squad less the loan players. I think EM will demand this from all associated at the club so any slackers (players or staff) will be bombed out!

RE: NFFC Financial Talk - Red Dog - 18-04-2023

Looking at that list, I would only keep Henderson and Lodi (given the choice) but neither is realstic UNLESS we are an EPL club. If in the Championship, then maybe Colback
