That would be my idea for sure. It could be that Zinck could be rolled out as the number 8 or 7 and instead of the fb taking up the attacking wing position we have the FB's moving centrally and the CM moving wide to take up the wingers roles. Would pull the other team out of position for sure and allow for say a right footed left back to cut inside to cross or shoot while giving us width and counter attack coverage.

This how we started in theory

This is the positions we played

Player 9 Grabban was playing where player 8 is.

Grabban would be 10 on the starting picture. But when I did the heat map I put 10 and 7 in wrong place. It's still early and brain not quite awake

So was it Grabban that was on the wing the whole time? I like this analysis, keep it coming.

As everyone seems to think not playing 2 DCMs will suddenly transform the team, I thought I'd look at what other teams are doing tactics wise. It makes surprising reading, so based on Flash scores 14 out of 24 teams played 3 at the back this weekend. This was a massive surprise to me, last season this definitely was not the case and in the prem it's only around 5 teams that play it.

Or the remaining 10 teams, 7 played 4231, 1 played 433, 1 played 4141 and 1 played 442.

I guess we should be looking to move to 3 at the back then to fit in with the crowds. Right now that would be fernandes or Harbottle starting unless Yates got moved back into the three. So I'm guessing a CB would be advisable too assuming any new manager follows these trends.

I think the fact that 6 other teams played 4231, does surely suggest that it isn't quite the millstone people think it is and that a change in formation isn't going to suddenly make us world beaters

Sometimes it’s not the formation it’s the way we play. 2 holding midfielders who can’t pick a pass is more of an issue. And 2 who just hold and lack any attacking prowess.

We don’t create chances, that’s the managers tactics of where they should be positioned on the pitch.

4231 is not the enemy it’s the tactics and players within that system.

I agree with the line above, its the player within that system. This is the point I'm trying to make, we don't have players to play it any other way. Garner will make a big impact in changing that.

(FYI, I'd prefer we followed to trend and moved to 3 at the back. Would get Soh into the team too)

It's not just the players it's how they play it. England played their best game at the euros by a huge amount when phillips pushed forward rather than just sat back with rice. 2 dcms where they both sit is tactically awful for results as well as watching. 2 dcms where 1 steps up into the middle of the pitch to link defense with attack can work extremely well. We do not do this and it must be coming from manager instruction. 1 of our dcms needs to spend most of their time 15 yards further up the pitch.

Colback in parti ular has been looking after the full back as we've been so vulnerable there. If he pressed on we would've been stuffed rather than narrowly beaten.
