RE: Our Goalkeepers - Salvatore Matrecano - 10-04-2024

Look at the bigger picture, Sels was €6m and looks like he is worth considerably more. By the way I wasn’t convinced about him at first but recent performances look stronger, that save low to his left on Sunday was first class.
So we have a keeper looking PL standard at last and we have to offload one at a loss but total outlay is £10m. Thats not bad, like most transfer dealings its worked out a bit swings and roundabouts. We need a No2 regardless and Turner is still here although I wonder if he may go to US.

Still early days, but Sels is looking like one of the best pieces of business that we’ve done since promotion. There’s a fairly good chance he starts for Belgium in the Euros too. It’s been a while since we’ve had a goalkeeper as commanding and safe. Even Brice had some sketchy moments at times! Hopefully we can get a younger backup to learn from Sels and perhaps an experienced number 3 just in case

Said in the transfer thread but do you wonder if he’d go back to Portugal with Rio ave? Or is it too low a side for him?

Lol, he's had a few decent games but I think this is getting a bit carried away again!

After watching MOTD I'm convinced Sels could have stood still and caught the ball yesterday. Shambolic marking too.

Looks like Sels has a decent chance of playing for Belgium. Congratulations to him. However, I've been reading some typically over the top reactions online describing him as "great" "better than we had last season" etc.

My thought are this:
Sels came in and steadied the ship when we were desperate for our keepers to stop chucking in goals. His kicking is excellent and he has made 2 or 3 really outstanding saves. 2 of which were World Class.

However, he is like dracula on crosses, rarely does he leave his 6 yard box when it's coming in from wide. That Brighton goal was coming as in a number of games before (and since) he's struggled in the air. Those set pieces were a problem all season (whoever was between the sticks tbf). Thought Evertons 1st goal was soft too, but his genuine "mistakes" have been very few.

It was £5 million we should have spent last August and saved ourselves a good few quid, but with hindsight its easy.

He will do for me for next season as we have other priorities (and major financial constraints) but beyond that I'd love to see us get a keeper of Hendersons ability in a years time.

To think Ody started with a clean sheet (and nothing to do tbf) against an in form Villa!

Everton might have to sell a decent keeper this summer!!!

Agree on all that except the Hendersons quality bit. He ain't all that.

I think a fit Henderson, playing regularly is top drawer. Slightly weaker on kicking than the very top keepers, but dominates his area really well. I think some people over egged the Worldies that flew in from outside box (only really Kanes was saveable).

He also exudes confidence into back line. They know any cross into box will be cleared or caught if its possible. Makes set piece defending alot less nerve wracking.

I suppose I like the fact he is of an age where he will only get better too. He could have been the foundation of our progression for next 6-8 years in different circumstances, but we move on as he's a Palace player now.

As an aside if Turner could be consistent he is actually OK. I think his mistakes (in all different shapes and sizes) were purely psychological. I suspect if he gets another chance he may take it with both hands-literally.

RE: Our Goalkeepers - Sniffer Dog (Admin) - 04-06-2024

I dunno.

I reckon the first time Turner fucks up with a kick then his confidence will be shot again.

I would rather both Turner and Vlachodimos move on and we add another keeper to compete with Sels (not just to back him up).

RE: Our Goalkeepers - Salvatore Matrecano - 04-06-2024

Agree, think Sels is OK but no better than that and agree he is weak commanding his area, coming for crosses just not his game. Ironically Turner is very good at that but think his time is done here, suspect he may look for a move back to the US. Ody has had bad luck but he isn’t going to stay as 3rd choice.

Need to look for yet another new No1 for me, yes we need competition for the shirt.

RE: Our Goalkeepers - Reds73 - 04-06-2024

Investment into a long term number 1 in their mid to late twenties who can be our keeper for the next 3 yrs would be a great investment.

Could cost us around 20m but if we can recoup half of that through Turner and Vlac then that would be a good investment.

You cannot have sub standard GK options in this league. Without Sels coming in we prob would have gone down. And we cannot risk Turner being next cab off the rank if anything were to happen to Sels.

I would be looking at Kelleher

RE: Our Goalkeepers - Salvatore Matrecano - 04-06-2024

Kelleher is a very good shout but there seems to be a “Liverpool tax” to get one of theirs.
Do we spend big on him as a known quantity with PL experience or risk another European for cheaper but may not make the grade.
