RE: Our Goalkeepers - Salvatore Matrecano - 03-01-2024

Garth Crooks Team of the week. Hmmm…not convinced you actually watched the game Garth?

Goalkeeper
Matt Turner (Nottingham Forest): Liverpool's Alisson did what he had to do against Burnley but conceded two goals against Newcastle, although that didn't stop his side from going three points clear at the top of the table.

Newcastle's Martin Dubravka saved a penalty from Mohamed Salah and had an excellent game, but couldn't keep Liverpool at bay and his team got battered at home by Nottingham Forest a few days earlier.

Manchester City's Ederson played three games in a matter of days - including the Club World Cup final - and kept clean sheets in two of them. He rarely lets his team down when called upon, but Nottingham Forest's Matt Turner makes my selection for two outstanding performances away at St James' Park and at home to Manchester United.

The American lived dangerously at times against United but wins my vote. Two great wins, two great matches and a very successful period for Forest.

Does anyone know anything about this new guy from Belgium? I'm so nervous about this one I think we all wanted someone known and experienced in the prem. Hopefully Nuno knows him.

Nuno was keen for him over other options according to reports

Think we should have stuck with Turner. He has been improving. Granted the near post goal this week has been his final nail in the coffin moment but apart from that I was very impressed. His kicking was actually decent too. Samba was dodgy on his near post too!
Vlach- I saw him very close up v Blackpool and thought he was shocking.

We do still have Turner........ he is able to keep the shirt if he deserves it

I am worried as it is about getting relegated. The thought of sticking with Turner just makes our chances of going down even greater.

He's a number 2 every day of the week.

RE: Our Goalkeepers - Salvatore Matrecano - 01-02-2024

I get the impression that the foot through the TV moment was swiftly followed by a phone call to say “get a different goalkeeper by Thursday evening or else”.

Lets hope he is better than what we have but we have to accept there are absolutely no guarantees. Hope the fans give him a break if he messes up early on but suspect we won’t.

Thats the worry int it Salv? That we've just bought a third average keeper.

Having said that, he's going to have to be pretty poor to be worse than the current two.

RE: Our Goalkeepers - Salvatore Matrecano - 01-02-2024

Still maintain Turner is a decent keeper just has zero ball control with his feet.
Ody I have no idea, he has looked poor but he has buckets of top level experience.

Neither are that bad, just not PL standard which is elite level. So the question is have we signed a 31 yr old elite level keeper for £5m thus far undiscovered outside of France?

Re Turner, I guess the modern game has moved on and exposed his weakness. With high presses these days, keepers in the prem have to be able to play with their feet. Turner just cant do that.

Ody I have no idea. As you say, he's played at a high level so why's he been such a passenger in games? It's bizarre.

Re the new guy, I guess the thinking is that we've signed an average keeper, but a keeper who Nuno knows is relatively dependable. So no firework display performances probably expected, but no ricks either. That's fine with me. We were in a corner and simply had to address the situation. If we hadn't then I'm certain this season will have ended in disaster.

It's not just the footwork stuff, he's palmed a few in too. The goal vs Spurs where after he gave it away he then just pushed it in and Jesus goal during the week.
