I fully agree with what you say and Mangala is a great example. He has indeed improved particularly recently, thought he was immense especially in the Southampton game. My question is, can he develop to be a top half Premier League CM?

Do you realistically think any combination of the above names you listed would dominate a midfield or are capable of gaining more than 20% possession vs Arsenal?
If the answer is no then we need better. If that means a player who we have grown to love needs to drop out the team to accommodate someone better then so be it.

To answer your question, yes I think Mangala definitely could develop into a top half CM, same goes with Yates and Danilo. It doesn't mean they will of course. I feel like it's too early to know either way on all three. Top players don't just suddenly become top players out of the womb. They develop over time and experience. I believe these guys have shown they have the right attributes, now just need to continue their development.

Second season is the real barometer, if they continue to raise their game now they are acclimatised and have some experience then we'll know we're on to a winner, if not then we have our answer. Ultimately if we want to grow the squad with youth these are the growing pains and the dilemmas we have to face

No room for sentiment here anymore.
We have survived and everyone has done a magnificent job, one we can all be proud of. Keep the same group of players we get a similar season. Add squad players and we struggle again. We need upgrades. If we are to push on we need to be signing players better than we have. 2 or 3 improvements on our squad push us towards mid table. Do this every year and we start to rise higher.

Mangala has been immense in the last 2 months but if we can sign better he becomes the squad player.
A new defender seems to be a priority so that mens worrall, McKenna, filipe, niakhate or bolt don't play.

The current squad will forever be part of the club's history but we need to be writing new history every season.

One thing is certain it will be an exciting summer.

Not good enough?

What about the early part of the season all the opposition had to do was shoot from outside the box, and they scored. Plus hobbling around on crutches last week is not a good sign he will be ready for the start of the season.

Will Man U take him  back?

1st team upgrades only for me.
DM
CF (we need two)
RB
Keep Lodi if price is right, if better for less then look elsewhere.
Keep Henderson

We can't spend a fortune again.
With who is coming up and Everton / City points deduction potentially happening, consolidate team and finances

Therefore that takes improvement in all 3 lines.

GK - realistically need 2. Henderson plus 1 other

LB - Hopefully Lodi.

CB- we will need to spend a bit to get a starter, but certainly if playing 3 at the back we need another CB or if playing a back 4, need more athleticism in there. We have been linked to a few and wonder if we will look at Tanganga again as his career has stalled at Spurs. Quick, dominant and decent on the ball will cost a bit. To get to the next level we will need that.

CM - Need a top quality number 6 to really challenge Mangala. We have seen the improvement since Freuler and Shelvey have been put of the side. With Jack leaving, I wouldn’t be against Freuler or Shelvey departing if we can sign a starter in that position. Would give us Mangala, Yates, Danilo, Kouyate + 1 other.
This player needs to be really athletic, powerful and can control a game. If we could get a carbon copy of Paulinha that would be amazing.

STRIKER - this won’t come cheap. But we saw when Awoniyi was out, coops never fancied Surridge and we effectively played 3 months without a striker. That coincided with 13 games without a win.
We need to spend some money to see if we can get a player who can hit the ground running and score us 10 plus goals next season. This could cost 30m

Left Forward - Upgrade on Dennis required. Don’t think Coops ever really trusted him with the defensive side of the game. Need a player in this position to get 8-10 goals a season, similar to Brennan.
We have been linked previously with Sheraldo Becker.

So 6 quality additions.
In terms of exits who were included in the latest 25 man squad, and you also need to factor is we need to generate 3 spaces for Neco, Brennan and Danilo as these are now not classed as U21 - so will need 9 exits to make room.

EXITS FROM CURRENT 25 man squad.

Colback
Ayew
Lingard
Surridge
Dennis
Shelvey
Toffolo - ( assuming we sign Lodi and Richards is healthy)
McKenna (if we sign another CB then we surely can’t include 6 CB’s in a 25 man squad)
Navas

That would give us a 25 man squad, balanced, players used to the league now, and high class upgrades as mentioned above.

Exactly what I was trying to say, but Reds73 has done it better.

Great post.

The likes of Surridge and McKenna have 1 year left, so a decision needs to be made on them ASAP.

I agree with all of that mate,

I think LOB will probably be sold also. I wouldn't be surprised if Everton try and do a deal for Wood if they stay up. Or maybe a return to Burnley (Well, i hope)

From the non 25 man squad Mbe Soh,  Ojeda, Bowler, Hwang, Panzo and Laryea will likely all be sold along with Aguilera.

I seem to recall us being linked with Stuttgart CB Mavropanos last season?

Lerma, i believe he is out of contract, linked with him when Kouyate was injured, 28 years old. Palace after him by the looks of it

I'd love us to go in for Tammy Abraham, not sure if he'd be out of reach for us though?

Chelsea need to offload players, Broja, Gallagher, Loftus Cheek, and Hudson odoi possibly all available. Anyone one of them would improve our 25 man squad. Coops has worked with Gallagher twice, and Hudson Odoi for England under 17s

If we use the loan market and Sancho becomes available. Coops has worked with him before, seems to be at a bit of a crossroads. No better manager to get his career back on track.

I'd be looking at Alex Scott of  Bristol City. He's going to be a top player and is gonna get snapped up. Might as well be us.
If we are adopting the Brighton approach. We can expect the MGW of this world to further their career at some point so need to be ready for it and have players ready to drop in.
Aged 19. England Under 20 International. I'd be surprised if he's not not Coops radar.

Because of the success of the Brazilians i am thinking we'll probably look to bring Ângelo Gabriel in from Santos

Not realistically we sign all these players but hope that some would be on our radar

RE: What Do We Need To Strengthen To Progress? - Salvatore Matrecano - 24-05-2023

Some good shouts in there nffc93 and I doubt anyone can improve R73’s summary above either.

Good that everyone is saying the same thing, any incomings must be someone who is or at least has the potential to be a regular starter and imprve the team. No more squad fillers.

I said at the start of the thread there are no wrong answers here and we should be open to unpopular decisions. Henderson is one and I think it is correct to question whether he is good enough and indeed fit enough to justify a £30m rumoured fee. His attitude seems excellent though and reckon he definitely wants to stay.

Sancho is a great shout for a loan. Unrealistic? Maybe but we saw Coops giving him a big hug at the end of the game, possible it suits all parties. Think we should certainly aim for that sort of calibre. If big EM can tempt Navas here then nothing is off the table.

By the way and slightly off topic, saw a post by a Derby fan who reckoned they should be targeting Alex Scott. Dream on sheepies, we’ll let you take Arter on loan if you like.

I've just seen that post. It seems to be the latest 'fun' activity of Football Twitter to come up with plainly ridiculous transfer targets, call them a 'realistic list' and post them to troll opposing fans.

I thought she'd retired?

Calum Hudson Odoi would have legs i reckon. Obvious link with Cooper and likely to leave Chelsea. Hasnt set Bundesliga on fire, needs the right coach to get him back on track?

Think Mckenna is basically gone, 2024 contract and injury / error prone.

Lodi is a must keep for me, has quality and now a PL season under his belt.

Right side Aurier and Neco looks weak, despite Aurier good season, will be 33. Neco really not hit anywhere near for me (i know SM loves him but re-watch the first 6 games of the season)

Midfield all about who we retain, obviously the hits Danilo, Mangala stay, Frueler will prob get another year to prove worth as he remains class at international level. Shelvey just bin. Yates of course stays, possibly need anohter body in there but depends if playing a 3 or a 2.

Up top its obvious need another Awoniyi dare we nibble again for Davis now they're not asking for £30m.

Keepers obvious so not mentioned.

No to Davis. Not done much in the Championship this season and if you're saying McKenna is gone due to being injury prone then you don't sign Davis for the same reason.
