Big Larry Lloyd, talking about Brian Clough:

'I played for Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley but, without doubt, Cloughie was the best. 'It's close, because Shankly was a genius too, but Cloughie did it with a much smaller club.

'I can't remember ever having a tactical or coaching lesson from him, but as a football manager he was second to none. He made us feel invincible. Every time we ran out there we thought we would win.'

Another classic Cloughie quote:

On the new offside rule: "If any one of my players isn’t interfering with play, they’re not getting paid."

:D  God, I miss you Brian.

A Stuart Pearce story about Brian Clough:

Celebrities often used to pop into the dressing room after a match.

At Watford when Elton John was chairman he would always pop in.

After one particular game Clough had gone to have a bath and was all lathered and oiled up when Elton came in.

Ronnie Fenton (Clough's assistant) shouted to Cloughie that Elton was here and wanted to say hello and Cloughie bellowed back 'tell the big fat poof I'll be out in a couple of minutes'.

All the players were rolling around the floor laughing and to be fair Elton saw the funny side also.

A Brian Clough story from Steve Bruce:

I was standing in a public lavatory, zip down, at a private function, when I became aware of a presence behind me, suddenly I took a whack from behind that knocked me into the urinal. The voice behind me was familiar: “Young man, that’s for kicking my number 9 Nigel as many times as you did. Now carry on with your piss…”

:)

Brilliant, that really made me laugh just imagining it!

Peter Shilton on Brian Clough and Peter Taylor:

“I was involved in the game for more than 30 years, but I don’t think I ever came across anyone else like Brian Clough. When he and Peter Taylor got it right, they were like a couple of magicians. They would have made great England managers.”

I miss Cloughie and Taylor so much.

I used to love Cloughie's one liners like this one:

“I don’t want troublemakers, I don’t want s**t-houses and I don’t want an ugly b*****d like Kenny Burns littering my club.”

Our school were asked to choose 16 school kids to be ballboys at the Forest v Bolton match on the saturday and a reserve match  the previous wednesday. I was lucky enough to have been chosen to do the first team match v Bolton (my PE Teacher knew i was a massive reds fan). We lost the match 1-2.

During the first half, the ball was kicked into touch, and i instinctively jumped up and caught it (my position was GK) and threw it back to Ian Bowyer rather swiftly.

End of the game, we are in the boot room, which we used as a changing room, when a certain Brian Clough came in. You could hear a pin drop.

He thanked us all for helping out and told us we were a credit to our school and parents etc. He turned as if to leave, then stopped, turned back to face us and said " Who was the young man who was on the Trent End side of the East Stand?" I kind of gulped and gingerly raised my hand expecting a bollocking of some kind. "You made a good catch in the first half" he said in his usual cloughie way, "I'm thinking of signing you up to be our new goalkeeper.........cos the one we've got now is bloody rubbish!!!" With that, he turned and walked out, leaving my classmates in stitches and me feeling like i had won the world cup.

Beautiful memory for me and one I love telling my kids about (even with a dodgy Clough impersonation).

Great story that Tricky. Thanks for sharing  :)
