Didi you see what the Newcastle left winger did to Johnson, Williams and Worrall all afternoon, every time he got the ball?
I'm not denying he had a bad game (as did the entire team). Saying he might not be 1st choice, is definitely starting the gun on writing him off though.
Maybe I am being defensive, I just can see the pattern and I wanted to try and head it off.

This should be a hot thread today because there is plenty to discuss.
Personally I have seen enough and I would like to see us drop the three at the back and go with a 433, we have the players for the system although Bowler would have been handy.

Agrees, happy with either 433 or 4231, but basically more central midfielders we keep getting overrun. We've bought enough of them!
Another option is to drop Lingard, put in Taiwo and drop MGW deeper. You would expect him to provide more cover than Lingard does

Taiwo and Dennis must start at the expense of BJ and Lingard. Elland Road can be an inhospitable place and we need players on the pitch who can hold the ball up (Taiwo) and have a pot shot (Dennis). If we're playing and extra nidfielder then just play Taiwo and try for a 0-0 to stop this wlosing run and try to get something.

Dennis looks like he wants to score at every opportunity. He's looking to get the shot off all the time. I agree about MGW but he's the best of the 3 atm. At least he has the ability to float around and play.

At least Brennan has had some shots/crosses. MGW playing the same position has had none that I can recall. I just don't understand why he's getting a free pass. Is it new toy syndrome? Brennan is clearly the best finisher of the three too. I haven't seen anything from Dennis so far that's made me think he'd be an upgrade on Brennan.
I would be interested to see Dennis tested in the central role though. Or drop Lingard and play Dennis alongside Brennan in our current tactics?

Our strategy and key to our success last season was our speed on transition, recovering the ball and breaking at speed hitting the front 2 early.
That lends itself to a 352.
Whether that can ever work in the PL Im not sure. Pretty sure it cant if our 3 CBs and 2 holding mids are all those we played in the Championship though, which is how we finished the game yesterday.

The Colback sub was pretty baffling. Boly will surely start next weekend too. Not sure why O'Brien got cut out though. Was disappointed that Yatesy didn't manage to get further forward.
I personally think McKenna and Worrall can make it at this level and had we stayed down would've expected them to move on to prem teams. Although McKenna's error was so bad. Can't allow many more of those!

Mentioned in other thread, the system works when you have a busy 10, MGW is that for me and I do believe dropping Lingard for a striker will help. Midfield looked so much better with OB and Mangala. Without Mangala needs to be OB and Frueler.
The quality is there, just needs to let go of attachments to last year's team

Whilst I agree an extra midfielder starting might help with ball retention - though it didn't at City - the tactics are almost obsolete if we keep being sloppy in possession and making individual errors.
A wise coach once said to me that any goal conceded can have been avoided and not always due to obvious errors (like the 3rd) but small things like losing a man further up the pitch exposing a midfielder that then exposes a defender or a poor choice of pass giving away possession.
Readings goal at their place last year came from a long throw. But the throw in was from Bongs sh1t pass straight into touch.
He also talked alot about compound errors. The 1st error being recoverable, but then a minor but wrong decision making things worse leading to a chance/goal.
Yesterday and so far we are making a combination of huge chance costing errors and many compound errors and I'm not sure why. McKenna makes about 3 errors a season, but yesterday cost us a point, topping off an unusually bad day for him. Worrall is a good player and sees tonnes of the ball, but he took about 5 touches most of the time before playing the ball to Neco whose space had been restricted in the mean time.
First goal-Crap clearance, Lingard -admittedly under severe pressure- loses possession and bang Hendo clutching fresh air.
Second goal pi$$ed me off a bit as we were made to defend a corner without Yates. No idea how serious it was that Yates needed treatment. But if it was to disrupt the game then it cost us and I guess that's Karma. If -as it appeared- it was a head injury the rule is daft. MGW was also down and if memory serves a Bournemouth player was treated-but I digress.
For tactics and plans and formations to work, we need to cut down on the errors. In some ways it reminds me of those first 8 games last season- albeit not in terms of the intentions or football on offer - we went through a phase of gifting teams opportunities Figs and Samba especially as I recall.
So I say stick to the plan (Cooper's that is) but do it better!
