We have a soft underbelly and I think he's playing three at the back to counter it.

A soft under belly would imply defenders are being out muscled in the air or done for pace etc. What is happening is centre backs are literally running into each other Keystone cops style which for me is more that they don't understand or cant do the jobs they are being asked in this formation.

You could argue there is room to grow as they get more comfortable with playing in this formation. The majority of the league use this tactic last time I checked too, I'd stick with it personally. I love how much freedom it's allowed the wingbacks.
I think playing in a more positive manner we are likely going to concede more chances for counters but that's ok if we're creating more too. A work in progress I would see it as.

Just wondering if 352 is the best formation, certainly in games like that. We allowed Fulham an extra man in midfield which they dominated not surprisingly given their quality too. The main point is defensively are we making it work? We are playing so much better going forward that many have overlooked that we haven’t cut out the soft goals conceded. Would we be better with a traditional 4 at the back, controlling the midfield better and having an extra attack minded player on the pitch? The 3 CBs dont seem to have worked it out yet, certainly not picking out any of them even the reliable Mckenna was making mistakes yesterday. The attacking threat of the full backs was also neutralised by a team that had done their homework.
The formation wasnt the problem under the previous manager, it was the lack of imagination as to how it was applied which lead to the team looking completely static at times. I would prefer a 4231 where we retain a freedom of movement and attacking intent.
I remember Alan Hansen's comments on 3 at the back. 'Who goes?'
He felt it caused confusion.

It has suited us 5 out of the last 7 games.
Fulham did their homework on us and have several 10m + players on their books. We lost but matched them for me for long periods of time f the game.
I would like to see mbe soh in a back 3 though…

Even if we had 3 midfielders on the pitch to match them up Seri is a class above this level, several classes in fact and he would of still controlled the midfield.
I do not think we need to over react and rip everything up that has served us so well in the last few weeks. Now is a time for calm heads rather than implode and disect everything based on a Fulham side that is far better than ours.
Patience and calm heads, it is working and players will learn more as time goes on in this formation and we will see the benefits.

Yeah I'd imagine 4231, ultimately we want Garner, Colback and Yates in the team regardless. Going to be tough to pick a first 11 if everyone is fit and noone leaves. Particularly if we get another winger in which seems likely

The 'in flight' tactical re-shuffle from Cooper yesterday was off the charts.
When it aint working. He changes things. ASAP. Even had Zinc Man warming up for ages to put pressure on the 'on pitch' players.
The transfer from 352 to 4231 was seamless. Probably because they've worked on the switchers for tactical changes and also helped by the balance offered by the returning Lowe who was mighty fine yesterday. Like he hadn't been away.
A word?
Phenomenal. Forest blew Derby away in the 2nd half. Rooney schooled.
But it shows you how pace hurts teams. The lungbusting run of Zinc Man (who I'd like us to sign) and the jet heeled BJ just shows you how much you need pace to hurt teams. Aided by the fact we seem to be playing much further up the pitch. So we're not playing in front of team's defences...we're getting in behind them and it's causing chaos.
Had we had Lowe (and the other new signings) vs Boro'. I reckon' we'd have beaten them. Teams can no longer target LB as a weak spot. (We DO still need to bring in another LB.)
That 4231 formation change yesterday was played as well if not better than any other time Forest played that formation.
What a transformation.

It's nice to hear you say that Wassy04. As a purveyor of common sense, it's nice to hear someone say that about the previously (and seriously injured) maligned Colback and the developing Yates (they couldn't play together, it was formerly alleged...) and Garner. Born to play in that no.10 role. Garner has been borderline sensational from that Arsenal match until now. Back to the form he showed last season.
Those 3? Have(!) to play.
What a Herculean transformation. No small credit to Cooper.

Said it earlier in this thread, we will be unable to play any football unless we have the ball. The big ball winner in the centre of the park is a must, no good getting in players like MGW if you are unable to get him involved, should have spent some money on the guy now going to Everton!
