Player Suggestions For The 2021 Summer Transfer Window

Well, it’s coming to that time of year again when we look at potential players for the Summer transfer window and hope that this is the year, we can get it right, right?
 
As has been pointed out, we have potentially many players going out, and there are number of players I’d want to get rid of too.
 
I normally put on player suggestions, and this year no different, but decided to start a thread covering any suggestions on players we all may have, then come the end of the window we can see if we have got any or if they have been signed elsewhere. Then in future times can also review to see if those players were a success of not, no hindsight required. 
 
Be great off to see your options but thought I would kick it off in the EFL, and what we need is goals, goals goals, but to follow here are some of my forward suggestions.

Johnson Clarke Harris Peterboro Age 26. How do the Posh keep finding forwards, Quick, mobile, powerful left foot and has 28 goals to his name. He really should be on our list!

Mallik Wilks Hull. 22 year old, 20 goals, 4 assists, fast player who comfortable wide in a front 3. Seems ideal to what we need.

Stephen Humphrys - Rochdale Age 23 years. He shone playing for Southend in their horrendous 2019/20 season, and he has sparkled again in struggling Rochdale side. HE can score goals in a relegation battle, how can he do in good team. Can score with both feet, can dribble and will work in a front 3. Definitely worth a gamble.

Yerry Yates Blackpool. 24 year old hard working striker who has lots of energy and gives defenders a hard time with his pressing. As added goals to his name now (18 this season), and has been linked to Forest.

Dion Charles - Accrington Stanley. 25 yr old with 17 goals to his name this season. Was in National League North in 2019 and since then hit gone from strength to strength.

Joe Piggott - 27 year old. Not quite sure on him, but is an unselfish all rounder who got 10 goals before Christmas, with right service (feed the pig) may do better, but can he make the step up?

Matt Jay Exeter, 25 years old. 17 goals. 7 assists so far this season, 68% conversion rate. Experienced in lower leagues, can he follow in the footsteps of Ollie Watkins and score in the Championship?

Luke Jephcott - Plymouth. Scored a plenty of goals, but was distracted in January by potential transfer rumours (including NFFC) a poacher who is valued at £5m by the The Pilgrims, I wouldn’t pay more than £500k (lacks pace)

Charlie Wyke - Sunderland, Age 28. Finally in the goals this season, but I wouldn’t go for him if he was available.

Kyle Joseph - 19 year old and highly rated at Wigan. Scored 5 goals in 14 games this season, Scotland u19 and has been watched by the likes of Spurs. Could be one for the future.

Daryl Dike - 20 year old powerful striker on loan at Barnsley from Orlando Pirates. Whoever been in charge of recruitment at Barnsley need to a pat on the back, This outstanding striker from the US only came in January on loan and hit 8 goals and is on less wages than our 38 year old experienced striker Murray (sums up our recruitment). Dike does have a high Release Clause, but worth looking at if Barnsley don’t go up

Sirki Demble (Peterboro)) Great potential, can play on either wing or number 10. Fast, Maverick, can score goals and looking to move on from Pompey, he could be a great investment now

We still need creativity and pace. Here are some Potential Midfielders and widemen

Alex Mowatt, (here I go again lol) Barnsley Midfielder - Mowatt has proven to be a consistent performer again and has brilliant delivery and driving Barnsley to the Play offs. He is a leader that will run through walls for his team. If Barnsley don’t go up, Alex is on a free. They will be a queue of clubs wanting his signature, but surely we must be in the hunt if we are ambitious for promotion, and with him 26 years of age he really is coming into the prime of his career.
Conor Houriane (villa / Swansea) A player similar to Mowatt (great left foot, good delivery etc) is Conor, albeit he is 30 now. He is on a free in the summer, and if Swansea don’t go up, perhaps we could try and get him on a bosman.


Gustavo Hamer – Coventry Age 23. Cost Coventry £1m from Zwolle only last year, and proved to be a bargain. Commanding midfielder, the Dutch – Brazilian is quality on the ball and has tenacity off it, would be a great signing.

Matt Crooks Age 27 – Can play as defensive midfielder and attacking midfielder. HE is a big unit at 6.4” who can put his foot in and score goals. A product of Man Utd youth team would surely want to stay in the championship if Rotherham get relegated.

Jed Wallace – Millwall, been around years it seems (and looks like he has) but is only 27, and although not had a good a season as last, he has natural speed, directness and good at set pieces. We could do with a player like him on the right.

George Honeyman – Hull Age 26. Another player who has been around but still young. Played in Premier League for Sunderland, captained them. Lost his way a little, joined Hull and having a great season and has double figures for assists this year. If Hull don’t get promoted, he be worth seriously looking at.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall Leicester 22 year old. Been tremendous for Luton on loan, good passing range, can carry the ball (don’t we just need players who can do that) and Leicester may look to loan him out again next season.

Noah Chilvers. Colchester. Only 20 years old, this promising attacking midfielder has shone in a struggling side.

Charlie Kirk – Crewe, Age 23. Mentioned him last season and left sided wideman has impressed again this season. Surely time for a move.

Jordan Graham – Gillingham Age 26. Once highly thought of but had too many loans. Finally signed for Gillingham and has become a cornerstone of the Gills attacking play, may be worth keeping an eye on him.

Flynn Downes – Ipswich Age 22. Standout midfielder for the Tractor Boys, but the central midfielder did have a knee problem but when fully fit he continues to prove himself.

Nicky Caden – Forest Green Rovers. 24 year old. Great left foot and delivery from left flank, may be looking at moving up the leagues to see if he can still deliver.

Elliot Watt. Age 21. Blackpool Scotland u21, signed from Wolves and has become a linchpin for the Tangerines.

Liam Kinsella – Walsall. Age 25. Can you remember his dad Mark (48 caps for Ireland) his son making name for himself at Walsall as a ball winning midfielder with plenty of energy.

Cameron Brannagan. Oxford 24 year old. Been at Oxford a while now and was out with an eye injury earlier in the season, but he is a key midfielder for Oxford, and perhaps ready to move on.

Morgan Rogers 18 year old who plays for Lincoln City, on loan from Manchester City. He plays as a midfielder or forward and has loads of assists working well with our Brennan Johnson. May be his next loan could be to Forest.

Alfie Doughty (Charlton) Looking for a player with pace and potential, then Doughty at Charlton, needs looking at. Injured at moment, but could mean if take a gamble you can get him now, whilst other clubs wait?

Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth) – Always chipping in with goals and assists. The Pompey star's work off the ball has also drawn admiration, with his 2.2 tackles per game ranking among the top 20 players in the league and be a good option on the left. Already a Republic of Ireland International as well 

Scott Twine (Swindon) 21 year old - is not quite the finished article just yet but has already started to deliver on his potential in the lower echelons of the Football League. He looks capable of making the transition to the Championship with proper guidance and maybe even to the top-flight in due course of time.

Potential Defenders and Keepers

For me the best right back in the league has been Swansea’s Connor Roberts,  great threat going forward, just 25 years old and played 25 times for Wales. Swans are his boyhood club so may be hard to entice him away, if they get promoted then no chance, but worth considering.

Callum Styles - Barnsley (yet again)  21 year old Styles signed for £500,000 and for me would be the attacking left back we need. He can play left midfield as well.

Michał  Helik (Age 25 ) is a Polish professional 6.3” centre back for Barnsley and the Poland National Team, Mads Anderson would also be another option if they don’t go up.

Lewis Montsma – Lincoln, Age 22. 6.3” Dutch centre back making a name for himself at the Imps. He also scored 8 goals for them (our strikers could take a few tips) and if Imps don’t go up, he could be a great replacement for Dawson and Figs.

Reece Burke – Hull. 24 year old 6.2 central defender. Steady but not much more

Ethan Laird (19) is Milton Keynes Dons, on loan from Man U. Might be worth seeing if Man U looking to sell as pretty stacked out at right back.

We have Mckenna as Left sided Centre back, but if we wanted competition of looking to play 3 at back, then Millwalls Giant Centre back Jake Cooper would be an awesome signing.

Luke Woolfenden (Age 23) is Ipswich Town. A graduate of the Ipswich Town academy, making his senior debut in 2017. Primarily a centre back, he can also play as a right back.


As for Keepers, not many good ones around. So gone for one older, one coming to his prime and a prospect

Vaclav Hladky, Salford, 30 year old shot stopper who many believe is best in League 2, and highest save percentage. May want the challenge of a Championship and fight for number 1 spot with Samba, and wouldn’t break the back for the competition.

Craig MacGillivray - Portsmouth - Pompey haven’t had the best of starts to the current season, but their 6.2” keeper is growing his reputation after joining from Shrewsbury in 2018. He’s only 26 and boasts good reflexes and has been called up to the Scotland senior squad. He could provide us with another proven option.

Matthew Cox. 18 year old Wimbledon – who joined Chelsea at age of 8, but left at 14 to join Wimbledon. He is viewed as a real goalkeeping prospect who been called up by England u18.

There is a massive difference though. All of Widdows suggestions are 27 years old or younger and by definition have potential to improve and also future resale value.
Of our 14 signings last summer 10 were 28 years old or over. Its no surprise to me what happened.


Thanks Widdow, this is really comprehensive and helpful for those of us who dont follow the lower leagues. Will wait to see if any of your suggestions are acted upon. Not sure Mowatt will swap Barnsley in the PL for us now though!

Great list Widdow. Among the strikers, I wouldn't say no to Wilks. Daryl Dike is probably the best of the lot already at 20, but if rumours of the price tag they've stuck on "The Oklahoma Lukaku" are to be believed (10-20 mil), he is probably out of our range. BTW, it's Orlando City. Orlando Pirates are from S. Africa.
I'd love it if Barnsley don't go up and we have a chance at either him or Mowatt.

Got to admit that is a good list of players and a good read, but I'm not sure that we will see any from that lot being signed or even looked at by Hughton, but time will tell, going to be an interesting summer

Good list. Positive suggestions of the 'kind of' positions and age range Forest could do with.

However, much of that list may prove quite pricey if, as some say, Forest need 8 signings.

I'm looking forward to this Summer to see What Chris and Gary have up their sleeves.

Garner is an obvious target & potentially Nelson.

Hughton seems to be well respected & hence I’m hoping for ( at least ) 3 quality additions.
