However I also think it's worth pointing out that our outstanding Academy was put in motion long before Gary Brazil.

Paul Hart and later Nick Marshall transformed our Academy and put our Academy on the map.

Gary Brazil has been in charge for 10 years now and we have seen a handful of talents break through in all that time who have gone on to play at the highest level. Not a huge amount for a period of 10 years. Matty Cash, Brennan Johnson and Yates all PL standard but is there anyone else? Worrall, Osborn and Burke all Championship level in my opinion.

Compare that with the likes of Michael Dawson, Jermaine Jenas, Andy Reid, Karl Darlow, Steve Stone, Scot Gemmill, Wes Morgan, Jamaal Lascelles, Marlon Harewood etc who all came through under Hart and Marshall. Then there was the likes of David Prutton and Gareth Williams etc.

I think there is a bit of food for thought.

Let’s not spin that Gary Brazil hasn’t been a wonderful asset to the football club during a period when funding in the main for our academy was much lesser than many of our competitors like Leicester and Derby. Like most acknowledge many of the graduates have gone on to be sold for significant amounts of money. Without that income we would have been in serious FFP trouble in the championship if not insolvency. Where would we have been without the sales of Burke Cash and Appiah

Let's not spin that I said Gary Brazil hasn't been a wonderful asset.

Doughty and Fawaz took us one breath away from extinction so we had no choice but to sell player's.

We don't have to do that now because the football club is now on solid footing thanks to EM.

All I am saying is 10 years is a very long time and we have Cash, Johnson, Worrall and Yates playing at the top. Not sure what Burke and Appiah are doing now but they would probably command fees of 2 or 3M they are hardly world beaters.

You can slag me off all you like but I always back up my posts with the hard facts whether people like it or not.

Having said that I like Gary and I have no problem if he stays.

Brazil has helped the club tremendously. Deserves a lot of praise. Love the morals he installs and the work he puts in to making the youngsters good people. However, if we think we can get someone in that can take it to the next level, why not? No time for sentiment in elite sports. I don't know enough about the rumoured new person but I'm not naive enough to think Brazil is the best academy director we could possibly get.
The younger age groups aren't as well run as a Premier leagues club should be either.

Being a Cat1, Premier League club for a sustained period with little competition in catchment area would help getting that lot massively.

Its not just about developing future Premier League players although i would say we have punched above our weight there too. We have only been a Cat 1 academy since this year so as has been said we cannot expect to compete with some clubs.

However a list of academy graduates in the last 12 years or so who have gone on to have respectable league careers

Patrick Bamford
Wes Morgan
Felix Bastians
James Perch
Oliver Burke
Karl Darlow
Jamaal Lacscelles
Lewis McGugan
Eugen Bopp
Alex Mighten
Brendan Maloney
Ben Osborn
Gregor Robertson
Ryan Yates
Anel Ahmedhodzic
Arvin Appiah
Ben Brereton Diaz
Tyrese Fornah
Jorge Grant
Brennan Johnson
Matty Cash
Tyler Walker
Joe Worrall
Jordan Gabriel

Possibly a few others too plus some more definitely in the current academy teams.

Change is always inevitable, one day sooner or later both Brazil and Joyce will leave and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Just hope we aren’t shooting ourselves in the foot.

Bale was sold to Spurs in 2007. Are we to include Jenas Reid and Dawson in our lists.we sold Bamford ten years ago because we were on the verge of bankruptcy following the death of Doughty. He went on to play for England. We now have three players from the academy who will be in our starting 11 in a premier league match tonight. We have also sold Burke, Cash, and Appiah for getting on for £40 million quid. We needed them sales to at least comply with FFP and in Burke avoid insolvency. We sold those three at the highest market value they will ever be which for me is greater credit to the academy. Considering for most of that time the academy has been massively out funded by our local rivals Derby and Leicester and not been a category A, it has more the punched it’s weight and compares in a reasonable light to the Southampton which has had many more advantages and probably been the most productive in the country. Nobody can say Brazil hasn’t done a brilliant job in charge of our academy. I will be very sad to see him leave.

Shame, Harbottle & Swan didn't make it to the playoffs.
I was hoping Cloughie and them two would win a promotion.
Harbottle scored today though.

Forgot to add Berretton to that list and Lascelles and Darlow who were sold during the last ten years. So that lot adds up to over £50 million. Got a few more such as Alex Mighten who are highly rated. Got to final of FA youth cup for the first time last season. Despite numerous limitations our Academy has over performed under Brazil.

I wrote a full list above JBH, probably on the previous page now.
Came up with 24 names, 11 of whom have gone on to play in the Premier League and 6 full internationals.
Yes well over £50m there.

Not bad for what has been a 2nd tier academy until last season.
It may well be that Gary wants to move on, we don’t know. Maybe the next guy will be better still.
Just the reports that a new contract wasn’t even offered are disappointing if true.

Every Academy in the country has produced players and sold home grown players so there is nothing unusual about it.

I could have added plenty more average players to the Southampton list but I didn't bother I just added the really good players. I left out the likes of David McGoldrick, Leon Best, Chris Baird, Yoann Folly and Lewis Price etc on purpose.
