The majority of those sales have been to survive financially after previous attempts to ‘go for it’. Clearly going for it hasn’t worked, the problem has always been that it would take so much to get the club to a stable closer to profitable situation with massive wage reductions changes to ticket pricing and marketing. I guess it’s always been decided by whoever is in charge that it’s better to keep going for promotion instead even though we’ve not threatened. We are regularly 150% wages to turnover ratio which is usually in top 2/3 in league so we need to sell to find this wage budget.
The darlow/lascelles sale did work in fairness. Lascelles is worth a lot and could make the England squad soon at current place but darlow is a write off. We signed two better players that should’ve carried us to the top 6 that year. Antonio was so far the best player in the league that year. We made around £22m off Britt/Antonio so we did make a decent profit on those deals.
I’m still sad about the Burke sale but it’s not gone well for him either. So that does look like good business. I guess we have to try and be business like and be happy when we make decent returns and hope that this time the reinvestment works and we can finally afford to keep the academy players
