This is something that has been mentioned on this forum numerous times and it needs its own thread.

We need a proper recruitment policy put in place at this football club.

The way in which we recruited last summer was a scatter gun approach that cannot be repeated again this summer.

For the record, Mendes and Marinakis have NOT fallen out and Mendes has already recommended 3 players from Portugal for Olympiakos (allegedly) for next season.

I guess the difference with us and wolves we got a kid who’d barely played any pro games and wolves got the Portuguese captain! The rest were loans in both cases.

For me loans with a view to buy are fine but we should not invest anymore budget.

I think the mistakes were a lack of depth too, Murphy as the only backup striker to someone with an injury record. No backup LB was ridiculous, meaning we’re also short on wingers (although I guess we had Dias before)

I suppose part of the problem was just how bad our team was and how many players we needed. Hopefully year 2 can address the obvious weaknesses in the squad. Our first 11 when fully fit on paper is top 5 in my opinion. Just wonder where we’d be if grabban had been fit the entire season. I’d speculate 5th!

A few people have asked me...Why do we keep taking players from Olympiakos (Kapino, Ansarifard, Tachtsidis).
The answer is simple, we sell them for 1-2 million each. How else can we claw back some of the 13 million that Mendes had our pants down for when we signed Carvalho.

There are currently 32 players in our first team squad.

There are a lot of players there not even making the matchday squad, look on our bench last night, there was nobody you thought that could realistically make an impact. We have a bloated squad of mostly mediocre players in other words yes we have a poor recruitment policy.

I think it will be different this summer. Before, we need improving everywhere to avoid another relegation fight but since then we are significantly improved. MON and RK know that we need a keeper, another winger to reduce our reliance on Lolley, a dominant central midfielder and a mobile forward who can hold the ball up and well, scores goals.

Last night we can up against a team that has spent nigh on £200M and it showed. This highlights the injustice of parachute payments when the likes of Forest have to compete with such opposition spending power. So our recruitment team have to get it right. The two consolations we have this summer is MON and RK and that we can concentrate on 4 positions rather the whole team.

NG3 we finished on 53 points last season, the same total as we have right now. We were only 12 points ahead of the relegation zone and there were concerns about relegation. That’s why we had wholesale player incomings during the close season. We didn’t want another season of struggle which is how I’d label the overall 2017/18 season. The season before that were worse.

The point I’m trying to (badly) make here is that this close season we have the dbasis of a decent team rather than seasons before. Therefore we are in a better position to concentrate any funds that might be available into fewer players. That should enable O’Neill to improve the team. Although this season isn’t over, I think last night showed clearly that we are short of a few quality players in key positions. Next season I have higher hopes and expectations

The big difference is Mendes has a financial stake in Wolves, so if he has their pants down he has his own pants down.

Loans can be an expensive way of doing business.

Take Mings, who played for Villa last night, he's cost Villa over £2m, then in June they still need to spend to either buy him, or replace him, but with £2m less to do it with.

That was the season before, last season we spent most of the first half of the season in the top half, not to different from this season.

Why panic buy? ... in January maybe but not in the summer and with the money we had at our disposal..

Spot on.  I think those are the areas that have unbalanced the side and left us very dependent on Lolley.  Teams will try to stop Lolley and thus stop us playing.  With Grabban out as well along with two out of three of our Portuguese recruitment out, on the bench or under performing...

....I look at the Summer recruitment and wonder what we were thinking.

In Jan' we did well to address the back line and CM.  But in an attacking sense, we haven't really addressed that.  Maybe that's a Summer thing.
