Which poor decisions by the manager?

Agree Freeman shouldn't have been sent on.

Pretty sure Hughton didn't miss any sitters or give the ball away though. Maybe he decided on Ribeiro's studs causing him slip over for 2nd goal. Or did he feed Freeman pies over last two weeks to make his ar$e big enough to block out the sun?

I thought the display was pretty good for the most part, but having not taken our chances we reverted to type for last few minutes.

Tuesday will be a good barometer of whether we are heading in right direction in terms of performance.

The bench was absolutely poor

Mighten not in the squad

And lack of subs being made throughout the game.

You can dress it up anyway you want, but its not good enough, the players have to take a good look at themselves, but he is the manager he should be getting the best out these players and this squad, we did not look balanced enough throughout the team, and to be honest he cannot keep picking Christie, he is a liability and gets caught out too many times, he`d be better off bringing in Jenkinson.

Lolley still isnt fit enough and looks to be struggling, we give too many free kicks away, Hughton needs to get this lot clicking and he needs to be getting more out of this squad, we have just had an international break and looking at this lot you wouldn't have thought so, I know we started the game on the front foot and were for best parts of it we were the better team, but they also hit the crossbar three times, what did our players hit, our midfielders don't get up the pitch high enough to be able to weigh in with goals, same old, same lessons not being learnt.

Not sure what subs would have improved us,  Ameobi may have done something, our bench didint look too strong when we were chasing the game.

In my humble opinion, the most balanced post I have read regarding not using the subs. I think we are in minority SM, but I agree 100%. Dont get me wrong I am gutted we lost, but starting XI played very well.

I was reading the other day about a non scoring CF for Burton Albion a few years back. All his teammates said he was crucial to their success. Guerrero has only played a few games and should get better, (hopefully his finishing will too), but we look a better team with him on the pitch.

Anyway, I've been spikey enough for one night. Good evening all. Onward and upwards.

This was pretty much the discussion I was having with my Dad, was only really Ameobi we felt could offer an improvement. However subs isn't just about improving the team, its predominantly about bringing players on that have more energy.

I said when Barnsley made the 4th sub it would be an interesting experiment on the 5 subs situation as it was 4 subs v 1. Obviously a pretty small sample but it was clear Barnsley had more energy after that.

Personally felt Hughton should've matched them at that point as it gave them a fitness advantage regardless of the drop off on quality. I dont think it would've been unreasonable to bring on arter for colback, ameobi for knockaer, jenkinson for Christie or iannou for ribeiro.

Although partly this is just a personal thing, I think managers are currently wasting the 5 subs option. In the first lockdown watched some German football when they restarted and most teams made at least 2 changes at HT. Personally I would be taking advantage by asking certain players to press harder than normal with a view to rotating them at HT.

Can I also say I thought Guerrero played really well in the first half, just a shame the chances fell to him not Taylor

That's a fairly compelling case. A 90 mph game on the back foot was definitely taking its toll on Barnsley players, so may well have done on ours to some extent especially when their fresh legs came on (alongside our chubby ones)

Still think it was more the sucker punch nature of the goal that took the wind out of our sails psychologically-then physically. The subs you suggest probably wouldn't have weakened us too much. But could it have upset our rhythm? Freeman certainly did...

Well this is the debate, as I said probably needs a bigger sample size. You could probably also argue that given they've just had a two week break fitness should be at a higher level.

I said at the time they made the 4th sub I've no idea if the Barnsley players are better or worse but perhaps the difference in quality from their first 11 to subs is less than ours.

As I said this is a personal thing for me, I really feel subs are underused and should be premeditated particularly now we have 5. I'm surprised no-one has seen this as a viable strategy yet.

In general you wouldn't expect your subs to be as good as the first team otherwise they wouldn't be subs!

Imagine if we had a fit Sow, Mighten, Grabban and Joe W (although I think Figs just keeping the shirt warm for Joe's return) plus Ameobi and Arter on the bench. 4 or 5 of them if we are not playing well could certainly change things up.   Whilst playing well, could also be the case, but I always think football is about finding your rhythm, it appeared we had found ours going forward, creating 4 clear cut chances of which you have to score at least 1 or 2. Ameobi would certainly have been my choice for fresh legs when Guerrero was flagging.

I feel a big squad should allow key players to be rested, but I would fear for us without McKenna and Taylor. We just dont have much outside our current top 13 players available.I think we miss Worrall alot more than we thought we might too.

Its a fair point, I certainly don't think its as conclusive as has been suggested elsewhere. Although in this case the evidence does point towards subs being effective.

Yeah Worrall being back soon will help, I did like Sow playing thought he added something different to the midfield, shame Arter has been so disappointing.

Yeah I wanted ameobi rather than Freeman, think he should've come on. He's ideal to be a supersub, unpredictable, fast, excellent touch and tall so you can become slightly more direct. I've always thought this should be his role full stop rather than as a starter.

RE: Barnsley - Nottingham Forest - ThePromisedLand - 21-11-2020

We have - on paper at least - as big and as strong as any 25 man squad in the Championship.
All clubs will suffer from injuries - we are no different.
The point I’m making is that we cannot put our lack of success down to the absence of players like Grabban, Worrall, Sow etc.

RE: Barnsley - Nottingham Forest - Tricky - 22-11-2020

Far be it for me to criticise CH, but there are a couple of things I don't understand about yesterdays squad, especially the bench.

Why didn't he have Will Swan and Alex Mighten on the bench? Lacking in experience maybe, but two very fast and skilful players who would be perfect to bring on for the last 20 minutes against a tiring defence.

If they played in an U23's match a couple of days ago, so what? Having a striker of any description is better than none at all. And I rate Mighten so much better than Freeman is giving us right now! They are both young fit lads, they could play a match every other day without it affecting them too much! To bring them on for 20 or so minutes would give them a bit more experience and maturity to their game as well as add impetuous to the side.

I sincerely hope CH isn't the kind of manager to turn his back on youth in favour of the older and more experienced players (even if they aren't as good)

RE: Barnsley - Nottingham Forest - ThePromisedLand - 22-11-2020

His record at bringing on kids is not good Tricky.
That is not a criticism - just an observation.

Thanks TPL. I kind of had that impression TBH mate (him not using kids)

RE: Barnsley - Nottingham Forest - Sabricadabra - 22-11-2020

Will Swan is definitely one for the future. He needs to go out on loan to help him develop.
